Former West Ham player not 'overly excited' by Julen Lopetegui appointment

Teddy Sheringham isn't too impressed by West Ham United's replacement for David Moyes.

This week, the club confirmed that Moyes would be leaving the role of manager at the end of the season, to be replaced by Julen Lopetegui.

The Spaniard's resume includes management stints with the Spain national team, Rayo Vallecano, Porto, Real Madrid, Sevilla and Wolverhampton Wanderers. It was at Wolves where Lopetegui was last employed as a manager, where he lasted a single season and led the side to a 13th place finish in the Premier League in 2022-23.

While Lopetegui's list of former employers is lengthy, Sheringham is not quite ready to get excited by his appointment as new West Ham boss.

Speaking to Genting Casino, Sheringham explained that he's taking a "wait and see" approach when it comes to supporting Lopetegui's move to London.

"I wouldn’t be overly excited by the appointment of Lopetegui," Sheringham said. "He does have Premier League experience, which is important. He knows what he’s walking into if he does come to the club.

"He did OK at Wolves. Maybe that’s being a bit harsh, because it’s not easy managing football clubs, which is why I’m sat here talking about managers rather than working as one.

"He’s got a decent reputation; he did well in Spain."
