What does Tim Tszyu need to do to get a rematch with Sebastian Fundora?

Perhaps Tim Tszyu was blindsided.

When Keith Thurman suffered a late injury during training, Sebastian Fundora wound up being his replacement and defeated Tszyu by split decision to become the unified WBC/WBO super welterweight world champion last March in a bloodbath.

Tszyu returned to the ring seven months later and suffered an annihilation in the form of a third-round TKO at the hands of Bakhram Murtazaliev in October.

Now, if Tszyu (24-2, 17 KOs) is going to climb back to earning a rematch against Fundora, a couple of things need to transpire. Fundora needs to defend his titles against Chordale Booker in Las Vegas on Saturday night, while Tszyu will have to defeat Joseph Spencer in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia on April 6.

If Tszyu is going to resurrect his career in attempt to force a rematch with Fundora, his fight against Spencer has to be viewed as a must-win situation.

With this being Australian Fight Week with George Kambosos Jr. taking on Jake Wyllie in Sydney, and live on DAZN, DAZN News thought it would be fitting to analyze what another Aussie in Tszyu must do to get a rematch with Fundora.

Make quick work out of Spencer as a statement

With all due respect to Spencer (19-1, 11 KOs), he has not faced the caliber of opponents that Tszyu has.

That said, Spencer also has nothing to lose, while a third consecutive loss by Tszyu would spell doom for his career.

That gives Tszyu all the more reason to make quick work of Spencer as a statement that he is indeed back.

Keith Thurman returned from a three-year layoff to produce a third-round TKO of Brock Jarvis just earlier this month in Sydney.

Tszyu needs as eye-opening of a performance to send a message to Fundora, Thurman and the rest of the 154-pound division.

Call Fundora out

An emphatic victory by Tszyu should be followed by a fiery call out of Fundora if the latter is indeed successful in his championship defense against Booker.

Doing this will create instant energy and groundswell toward Tszyu getting a rematch against Fundora or the original fight that he was supposed to have last March against Thurman. Either of those fights would put Tszyu back on the right track.

If Fundora rematch can’t happen, make sure Thurman fight does

Even before defeating Jarvis, Thurman made it clear that he was in Australia to lock down a fight with Tszyu.

Well, if the Fundora rematch does not pan out for Tszyu for any reason, he must meet Thurman halfway to seal what would be an intriguing fight nonetheless.
