Ollie Watkins names the characteristics Aston Villa lacked in Brentford draw

Aston Villa watched their early two-goal lead evaporate on Saturday in a wild 3-3 draw with visiting Brentford.

The Villans jumped out to 2-0 advantage after Ollie Watkins and Morgan Rogers scored in the 39th and 46th minutes, respectively, but the Bees struck back with three straight goals to take the lead as the second half neared an end. However, Watkins was on target again 10 minutes before the final whistle as the teams ultimately shared the spoils at Villa Park.

Villa are embroiled in a tight race with Tottenham Hotspur for fourth place in the Premier League, and have now picked up just a single point from their two most recent matches. Saturday's hero Watkins lamented his side's inability to close out the match, noting that the team seemed to "relax" when holding the two-goal lead.

He registered his disappointment following the game, telling Sky Sports that the Villans "always come out slow" in second halves.

"It's poor," Watkins said. "It was too easy for them to get in and score.

"It's really disappointing because it could have been a really massive three points. We've been 2-0 up against Manchester United away and conceded silly goals. We have done it here [again] today."

Watkins stressed that Villa need to maximise their results with Spurs breathing down their necks for fourth place.

"We've got a point but it should have been three," he said. "These are the games we need to be winning. That's what the top teams do.

"They finish it off, kill it off. They are smart. Maybe we just don't have that maturity yet or game intelligence."
