New England Patriots star opens up on club's head coach situation

The New England Patriots decided to part company with legendary coach Bill Belichick at the end of the 2023-24 NFL season. 

It was a move that stunned many fans and pundits. Belichick had coached the Patriots to six Super Bowl wins and an unprecedented 20-year dynasty. 

Patriots pass-rusher Matt Judon has opened up on Belichick's exit and the appointment of new head coach Jerod Mayo. 

Judon said on the Punch Line Podcast, "I was with Bill for three years. But that's just how the game goes. I'm not hurt or sad about it; I got to play for one of the greatest coaches ever. I was happy, but I guess it was time to part ways."

On Jerod Mayo, Judon said, "They had been saying for years that Jerod would be the guy. We saw the appointment coming. He was being primed for that role. We just didn't know when it was going to happen."

New England hired Mayo without interviewing any external candidates. The 38-year-old played for New England and recently served as the Patriots' defensive coordinator. 

Furthermore, Judon commented on the hands-on nature of owner Robert Kraft, "Mr Kraft sits in on our daily meetings. He watches game films with us. His office is upstairs. Mr Kraft and his son Jonathan are there every day."
