David Benavidez awaits Canelo Alvarez in September

After the win over Caleb Plant, the Mexican Monster is targeting the undisputed championship held by Saul Alvarez.

After scoring one of the biggest wins of his career by pulverizing former champion Caleb Plant, David Benavidez hopes he has done enough to catch the eye of undisputed champion Saul Alvarez.

The Mexican Monster has been challenging the pound-for-pound king for just over three years, but Canelo has refused to face him because of what he feels is a lack of sporting merit and also because he refuses to face his countrymen.

However, for Benavidez the time has come to face him and he would be willing to fight him this September.

"I feel Canelo needs this kind of fight, a big fighter like me. Definitely, my fight with Plant was huge. I feel like he will do very good PPV numbers. I'm ready to prove myself. Canelo has proven himself and I feel like now he has to give me the opportunity. It's not like I'm begging for something, I've been mandatory the last two fights, so it's something I've earned. Especially after this fight," he said during the post-fight conference.

Benavidez revealed that before he returns to the gym to start preparing, he will take a break with his family for at least three weeks.

"I've shown that I belong here, I've earned it. I've done a lot. My defense is good, I knew Caleb Plant was fast and I've been using my waist and my head movement, but I know I can be better. The fight everyone wants is Canelo, so we have to give it to him," he finished.

Canelo is scheduled to return on May 6 against Englishman John Ryder in Guadalajara, Mexico. This will be the Mexican champion's return to his homeland after a 12-year absence and will put all four titles on the line.
