Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold confirms the lowest point of his career

England and Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold admitted that last season was the lowest point in his career.

Last season, Alexander-Arnold received more criticism than he had in his time as a professional, with observers suggesting that he was not good enough defensively.

That was coupled with Liverpool’s failure in Europe and the Premier League, though they have recovered somewhat this season, and remain in a three-way title chase.

Speaking to Sky Bet, Alexander-Arnold reflected on the previous campaign.

He said: “[Whether last season was the lowest point in your career.] I would say so, yeah. From the start [of my career], it was up, from getting into the team and then all of a sudden the next season I am in a Champions League final and then going to the World Cup in my first full, proper season as a first team player.

“And then the next season winning the Champions League and the season after the Premier League - every season was just consistent [and a constant rise].

“I always thought that there would come that [low] point and I think it came at the right time. I think if it came too early in my career, it would dent my confidence and you would start to question yourself, whereas that wasn’t the point.

“I understood what I had achieved so far and was so proud of myself and how much work I’ve put in, but also understanding that I am not even halfway through my career and there is so much more I can achieve and figuring that out, what it is that I want to go and do, to achieve and challenge myself and push myself to my limits and have that demand on yourself to have to perform week in, week out.”
